IMPORTANT INFORMATION

REPORT INCIDENTS OF POACHING

FISHING / CATCHING / POSSESSING A
SPECIES THAT'S OUT OF SEASON

FISHING IN SANCTUARIES, EXCEEDING  LEGAL LIMITS, INTENTIONALLY SNAGGING, etc.

IF YOU SEE SOMEONE POACHING, RECORD ANY IMPORTANT INFORMATION THAT CAN PROOF THAT THE INDIVIDUAL IS GUILTY OF COMMITTING AN OFFENSE AND CALL THE HOT LINE NUMBER

FISH ONLINE A SEARCH ENGINE FOR BODIES OF WATER FOUND IN THE PROVINCE OF ONTARIO. SEARCH RESULTS WILL LEAVE YOU WITH VALUABLE INFORMATION ABOUT THE LAKE,  FOR EXAMPLE, SPECIES OF FISH THE LAKE HAS IN IT, THE LAKES DEPTHS AND CONTOUR LINES, AND STOCKING RECORDS.

THIS SITE PROVIDES YOU WITH REAL TIME DATA OF WATER LEVELS AND STREAM FLOW FOUND ALL OVER CANADA

These carps are all native to the rivers, reservoirs and lakes in China and southern Russia.

All 4 species have escaped into the wild in North America and 3 of these species have now established self-sustaining populations, particularly in the Mississippi waterway system, although Black Carp have likely established as well.

  • Asian carps prefer cool to moderate water temperatures like those found in the Great Lakes and reproduce rapidly

  • Asian carps can eat up to 40% of their body weight each day and can grow more than 25 cm in their 1st year and can reach 40kg and over a meter in length when mature

  • Vibrations in the water excite Silver Carp causing them to jump up to 3 meter (9 feet) out of the water. Vibrations caused by boat propellers have made Silver Carp a hazard to boaters and water-skiers and have caused serious injury to recreational users

  • Bighead and Silver carp eat plankton, the very foundation of the aquatic food web and spread aggressively

KEEP A LOOKOUT

FOR SIGNS POSTED ON RIVERBANKS AND SHORELINES.

SOME SIGNS INFORM YOU OF CERTAIN REGULATIONS THAT THE BODY OF WATER MIGHT HAVE.

FOR EXAMPLE: SECTIONS OF LAKES AND RIVERS ARE FISH SANCTUARIES AND ARE CLOSED DURING CERTAIN TIMES OF THE YEAR

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PIKE & MUSKIE

MAKE SURE YOU CAN DETERMINE THE DIFFERENCE, VARIOUS LAKES HAVE CLOSED SEASONS, SLOT SIZES, AND CATCH AND RELEASE ONLY FOR MUSKIE

GLOSSARY

BOW - THE FRONT OF THE BOAT

STERN- A BOAT'S BACK END

STARBOARD - THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BOAT WHEN LOOKING FORWARD

PORT - THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BOAT WHEN LOOKING FORWARD

GUNWALE - THE UPPER EDGE OF THE BOAT'S SIDES

KEEL - THE BOTTOM OF THE BOAT THAT RUNS FROM BOW TO STERN THAT SERVES AS FOUNDATION OR  THE SPINE OF THE BOAT

TRANSOM - OUTSIDE PART OF THE BOAT'S STERN WHERE THE MOTOR IS POSITIONED

BEAM - THE WIDTH OF THE BOAT

HULL - A BOAT'S SHELL

RUDDER - THE STEERING MECHANISM FOUND ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE HULL THAT IS USED TO STEER AND DIRECT THE BOAT IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS

TILLER - A POLE ATTACHED TO THE RUDDER, THAT ACTS AS A LEVER ARM OR HANDLE, USED BY THE BOAT OPERATOR TO STEER THE VESSEL.

WAKE - TRACK OR PATH THAT A BOAT LEAVES BEHIND WHEN MOVING ACROSS THE WATER.  (WAVES)

CAPSIZE - WHEN A BOAT IS TIPPED OVER

LEEWARD - DOWNWIND; AWAY FROM THE WIND

WINDWARD - TOWARDS THE DIRECTION IN WHICH THE WIND IS COMING FROM

DEADHEAD - FALLEN LOG OR HEAVY TIMBER THAT IS STICKING OUT OF THE WATER

BIODIVERSITY - THE CONNECTION OF ALL LIVING THINGS AND HOW THEY RELY ON EACH OTHER TO SURVIVE

CATCH LIMITS - THE CATCH LIMIT IS THE NUMBER OF FISH YOU ARE ALLOWED TO CATCH & KEEP IN ONE DAY, AND THAT INCLUDES FISH THAT ARE RETAINED FOR ANY PERIOD OF TIME AND ANY FISH EATEN OR GIVEN AWAY

POSSESSION LIMITS - IS THE NUMBER OF FISH YOU ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE IN YOUR POSSESSION ON HAND, IN COLD STORAGE, IN TRANSIT, OR ANYWHERE ELSE. POSSESSION LIMITS ARE THE SAME AS ONE DAY'S CATCH LIMIT EXCEPT WHERE OTHERWISE SPECIFIED.

SIZE LIMITS - ALL SIZE LIMITS REFER TO THE TOTAL LENGTH OF THE FISH WHICH IS MEASURED FROM THE TIP OF THE MOUTH TO THE TIP OF THE TAIL (WITH THE JAWS CLOSED).

OPEN SEASONS -  FISHING SEASON OPENING AND CLOSING DATES VARY DEPENDING ON SPECIES OF FISH AND THE LAKE, AREA OR ZONE. ALL DATES, INCLUDING THE FIRST AND LAST DATES ARE OPEN OR CLOSED. IT IS ILLEGAL TO ATTEMPT TO CATCH FISH WHEN THE SEASON IS CLOSED, EVEN IF YOU INTEND ON RELEASING IT. FISH ACCIDENTALLY CAUGHT DURING THE CLOSED SEASON MUST BE IMMEDIATELY RELEASED BACK TO THE WATER.

FISH SANCTUARIES - NO FISHING OF ANY KIND IS ALLOWED IN A FISH SANCTUARY. SOME BODIES OF WATER OR SECTIONS OF LAKES OR RIVERS ARE DECLARED FISH SANCTUARIES FOR ALL OR PARTS OF THE YEAR. USUALLY CLOSED FOR FISH TO SPAWN. NOT ALL FISH SANCTUARIES ARE MARKED KNOW WHERE YOUR ALLOWED AND NOT ALLOWED TO FISH BEFORE HEADING OUT ON THE WATER.

CONFLUENCE - THE FLOWING TOGETHER OF TWO OR MORE STREAMS OR RIVERS

PRIMARY PRODUCTION - THE PRODUCTION OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS THROUGH CARBON DIOXIDE; MAINLY THROUGH PHOTOSYNTHESIS. IT IS THE PRODUCTION OF CHEMICAL ENERGY IN ORGANIC COMPOUNDS BY LIVING ORGANISMS.

HYPOTHERMIA -  ABNORMALLY LOW BODY TEMPERATURE ( BELOW 36.6 °C) A RESULT OF PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO COLD WATER AND COLD WEATHER. NEVER TREAT A VICTIM OF HYPOTHERMIA IN WATER THAT IS TOO HOT, IT CAN CAUSE DANGEROUS HEART RHYTHMS AND WILL PUT THEIR BODY INTO SHOCK. SLOWLY INCREASE THE WATER TEMPERATURE OR WRAP THEM IN BLANKETS.

 * AGGREGATE LIMITS * - ARE CATCH & POSSESSION LIMITS FOR A COMBINATION OF FISH SPECIES. WHERE THERE ARE AGGREGATE LIMITS YOU MAY NOT CATCH AND RETAIN A SEPARATE LIMIT FOR EACH SPECIES.  FOR EXAMPLE WALLEYE & SAUGER , SMALLMOUTH & LARGEMOUTH BASS, BLACK & WHITE CRAPPIE. THERE ARE ALSO AGGREGATE LIMITS ON ALL SPECIES OF TROUT AND SALMON IN COMBINATION. THAT IS YOU MAY ONLY CATCH AND KEEP IN ONE DAY OR POSSESS NO MORE THAN 5 TROUT AND SALMON IN TOTAL UNDER A SPORT FISHING LICENCE OR 2 TROUT AND A SALMON UNDER THE CONSERVATION FISHING LICENCE

OLIGOTROPHIC LAKES   IS A LAKE THAT HAS A LOW PRIMARY PRODUCTION. IT ALSO HAS LOW NUTRIENT LEVELS AND LOW PLANT GROWTH. THESE LAKES HAVE LOW FERTILITY RATES AS WELL AS NUTRIENT DEFICIENCY. THESE TYPES OF LAKES HAVE VERY LOW ALGAE LEVELS AND AS A RESULT HAVE VERY CLEAR WATER WITH VERY HIGH QUALITY DRINKING WATER. THESE LAKES ARE VERY DEEP AND HAVE HIGH LEVELS OF OXYGEN FOUND THROUGHOUT. THESE LAKES SUPPORT MANY FISH SPECIES BUT HAVE A GREAT LAKE TROUT FISHERY BECAUSE OF THE COLD, DEEP OXYGENATED WATER. LAKE TEMAGAMI IS AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLES OF THIS TYPE OF LAKE.

MESOTROPHIC LAKE IS A LAKE THAT HAS INTERMEDIATE LEVELS OF PRODUCTIVITY. IT HAS FERTILITY LEVELS  BETWEEN OLIGOTROPHIC AND EUTROPHIC LAKES. THESE LAKES ARE INTERMEDIATE IN DEPTH, TEMPERATURE, AND WATER CLARITY. THESE LAKES OFTEN HAVE BEDS OF SUBMERGED AQUATIC PLANTS / WEEDS AND MEDIUM NUTRIENT LEVELS.

EUTROPHIC LAKE HAS HIGH PRIMARY PRODUCTIVITY, IT HAS EXCESSIVE NUTRIENT LEVELS WHICH MAY RESULT IN ALGAL BLOOMS AND POOR WATER QUALITY AND VISIBLILITY. THESE LAKES ARE A LOT SHALLOWER THAN OLIGIOTROPHIC LAKES AND THEY LACK OXYGEN TO SUPPORT FISH SPECIES LIKE TROUT THAT NEED WELL OXYGENATED WATER. THESE LAKES PRODUCE HIGH NUMBERS OF ZOOPLANKTON / MINNOWS AND A LOT OF SMALL FISH THAT FEED ON THE ZOOPLANKTON, THESE SMALL FISH PROVIDE FOOD FOR THE GROWTH OF LARGER FISH SPECIES.
